FAQs

Some frequently asked questions...

What is reflexology?

Reflexology is a science and complementary therapy that deals with the principle that there are reflex areas on the hands, face, ears, and feet that correspond to all of the organs, glands, and parts of the body. Stimulating these reflex areas properly involves applying pressure to specific points on the hands, face, ear, or feet to promote relaxation, improve circulation, and support the body’s natural healing processes.

How does reflexology work?

Experienced reflexologists can stimulate certain reflex points on the hands, face, ears, and feet that correspond to specific organs, glands, and body systems. Applying pressure to these points is believed to stimulate energy flow, promote balance within the body, and can help with many health conditions.

Is reflexology a medical treatment?

Reflexology is considered a holistic and complementary therapy, rather than a medical treatment. It can work alongside conventional medicine to support overall well-being.

What are the benefits of reflexology?

Please see my Benefits of Reflexology for more information. But, in short, Reflexology may help reduce stress, improve relaxation, enhance circulation, alleviate pain, and support better sleep. It’s also believed to aid in promoting the body’s self-healing abilities.

Is Reflexology painful?

Reflexology is generally not painful. The pressure applied should be firm but not uncomfortable. I ask everyone who comes for treatment to feedback on their comfort level so I can adjust the pressure accordingly.

How long is a typical reflexology session?

I offer a variety of treatment lengths that fall between 30 minutes to 90 minutes to make Reflexology as accessible as possible. Every treatment will be worked differently, as it depends on your bespoke treatment plan and what your reflex areas tell me on the day.

How many sessions do I need to see results?

The number of sessions needed varies from person to person. Some people may experience benefits after just one session, while others might require multiple sessions for more noticeable results.

Can anyone receive reflexology?

Reflexology is generally safe for most people, but it’s recommended to consult with a healthcare professional if you have any underlying health conditions. Some conditions that may contra-indicate for reflexology are:

  • Deep Vein Thrombosis, Thrombosis, or Blood Clots.
  • Uncontrolled seizures
  • Injury to the area receiving reflexology
  • Cellulitis
  • Foot, Hand or face infections.

Others undergoing IVF or cancer treatment should seek guidance from their doctor before undergoing reflexology. If you’re not sure please get in contact.

What should I expect during a reflexology session?

During a session, you will typically sit or lie down in a comfortable position whilst wrapped warmly in heated blankets that you can set to your personal preference. There will also be an aromatherapy diffuser available to really help the relaxation sink in. Once you are comfortable, your feet will be cleansed with hot towels, then a wax or lotion is applied to moisturize the hands, face, or feet and help me work the reflex areas. I will use my thumbs, fingers, knuckles, crystals, gua sha, or hot stones to apply pressure to specific points on your hands, face, or feet. You should feel relaxed during the session.

To get the full benefits from your treatment I would recommend avoiding strenuous activity after a session and taking it easy for the remainder of the day where possible.

After your treatment, you will also be provided with some hand reflexology techniques that you can work on at home to further extend the benefits of your treatment. This will be personalised to your specific aims and goals from undertaking reflexology.

What should I wear for a reflexology treatment?

I recommended wearing clothing that allows me to comfortably access up to your knees for any foot reflexology, up to your elbows for hand reflexology, or down to your shoulders, neck, and face for Bergman Facial reflexology and Zone Face Lift. You are welcome to bring something to change into for the treatment so we can fully work all the reflex areas. I also recommend bringing a fresh pair of socks with you for after a foot treatment, as this helps maintain the cleared energy pathways.

Do I have to remove any clothing for Reflexology?

Generally the only clothing you need to remove are socks and shoes for the foot reflexology. However, as stated in question 11, you will get more from your treatment if you can wear clothing that enables me to access all the areas I need. Some people like to remove their T-shirt/top for Bergman Facial reflexology and Zone Face Lift but this is not compulsory.

Is reflexology the same as massage?

No, reflexology is different from massage. While both therapies involve touch and pressure, reflexology focuses on specific points related to organs and body systems, while massage works on muscles and soft tissues.

Does reflexology diagnose medical conditions?

Reflexology practitioners do not diagnose medical conditions. If you have concerns about your health, it’s important to consult a qualified healthcare professional.

Is there any scientific evidence supporting reflexology?

There is a growing evidence base around reflexology in areas such as cancer symptoms, pain relief, fertility, and relaxation, and more research is being conducted every day.

I have ticklish feet – does this mean I cannot have reflexology?

Not at all! I’ve had many clients come to see me who report having ticklish feet and yet enjoy classic foot reflexology treatments because the pressure used is firm and specific to that person. If this is a major worry for you I would suggest booking a 30 minute foot treatment to get an idea of how you experience the treatment, otherwise try out the hand or facial reflexology.

What if I can’t make my appointment?

Life gets in the way sometimes and we understand that at Solely You Reflexology. As much as you are able, we ask that you give at least 24 hours’ notice when canceling or changing your appointment time or day, otherwise, we may ask that you pay for the treatment even if you miss it

What if I am late for my treatment?

We kindly ask that you arrive on time for your appointment. However, if you are running late then we ask that you inform us of this as soon as possible. Sadly, if you do arrive late, then the length of your treatment may be shortened to compensate for this.

What if I want to try a different treatment than the one I booked?

Please contact us no later than 24 hours before your appointment to ask to change your treatment. Please note, the change is only made when you receive confirmation from Solely You Reflexology. This is to make sure you get the best out of every treatment option, as some treatments require much more in terms of preparation.
